Going on a Vacation

Yeah, I'm going north to Penang Island on Thursday morning with the family so no updates for a few days. Gonna miss Bahlactus' call for a Friday Night fisticuffs as well but what the hey...I need this break otherwise I will break.

Absolutely nothing, Darkseid. Just chill by the beach with my Incredible Hulk Omnibus.

See you in June.

Date the Cheerleader and Save the Whales

The cheerleader from HEROES is auctioning herself for a date to save the whales.

And it's for one winner and five friends so six people can divide up the cost.

If the governor of New York can pay $4,300 for a two-hour session with a hooker from New Jersey, then $4,180 (current bid) for two separate meals, four hours of whale watching, a $1,000 American Express gift card and the company of Miss Panettiere sounds like a bargain!

Even without sex.

(And I like the fact that the auction advertises "Free Shipping." So, they can actually lift the ocean so you can take the cruise without leaving your house? And how does one pack a Hayden Panettiere?)

Sakura Sakurada's Porn Titles in (Broken) English

Spending most of my working hours in front of a computer with Internet access means I can pretend to be working when I'm really not. And today I just so happen to have stumbled upon one Sakura Sakurada's wikipedia page while pretending to be reading last month sales report freshly written by the guys and gals in Accounting.

Ms. Sakurada is a Japanese porn actress so to hell with Accounting, I'm reading her resume instead! Her list of films is extensive. It looks like she bangs out two movies a month. Pays the bill, I suppose. But what is amusing are the titles. They've been translated into English...badly. Below is a sample of her extensive catalogue:

Failure As a Mother

There Is a Molester Woman Next to You
- (I wish!)

Melancholy of Beauty Temporary Worker Special

Depression of a Beautiful Woman Temporary Employee

On the Street - Daring Sex on a Roller Platform (Movable Sex Truck)
- (Sounds like an unusually risque circus act. "And now, for my next trick, Daring Sex on a Roller Platform...")

Private Girl's School of Anal Spanking

My Wife Turn Out Slut After Marriage

Two Hot Lesbians in Double Loving Hot Spa Outing Extravaganza

Reserve Troop Girls (Erotic Dancing Teacher to Entertainer Wannabees)

The Real Document of Sales Woman Sex Business - Contract Technique 2

Stark Naked Nudist Marina
- (I'm an unashamed landlubber but I'll buy a yacht just to join that marina)

Your My Obediently Pet to Deal With Desire

I Want to be Done by Big Breasted Older Sister!

Shall We - Abnormal Dancing School
- (Gotta go here first. There might be a dance at the Marina. Don't wanna be left out.)

Paradise - Married Women Who Wear Sexy Glasses

Vibrator Attack
- (BAND NAME!!)

Immoral Lesbian Undergarment Saleswoman - well, if you're a lesbian with loose morals, undergarment sales is the perfect job for you, I agree.

It Can't Be Endured With a Private Teacher Special 2

Which is a Close Friend? Touch and Guess 6
- Sounds like a fun time to be had by all.

I Want to Do Sex as Such a Married Woman

Lecherous Women Teasing Sex (Sex Hell for Men)

Without Panties on the Bus

Semen Club 6
- (ANOTHER BAND NAME!!)

The Big Bust Teacher of Vagina Sperma Ejection

The Slave Private Secretary Who Had the Line of the Beautiful Foot

Big Tits Beautiful Masochist

I predict that this blog's hits will rise to the stratosphere after this. Disappointed they will be.

Marvel Trades I'm Planning To Buy In August 08

I realised I've never done this "let's copy and paste upcoming comic covers and talk about them and stuff" thing in DGR before...so let's start now with Marvel solicitations for products shipping in August. I only buy collected stuff so I won't talk about individual comics. I'm never going down that route again, folks!

The following books come under the "Oh, Hell, Yes!" category i.e. I've pretty much decided to buy these babies:

ELEKTRA BY FRANK MILLER OMNIBUS HC
Written by FRANK MILLER

Penciled by FRANK MILLER & BILL SIENKIEWICZ
Covers by FRANK MILLER & BILL SIENKIEWICZ

Who is the otherworldly entity in pursuit of the presidency? When has Elektra met her greatest triumphs and tragedies? Why did she die, and how did she return? Explicit Content …$74.99
ISBN: 978-0-7851-2777-2
Trim size: oversized

I much prefer the cover art for the direct market version but I'd settle for this version if I can't get the other one. I'd gladly sell someone else's kidney to buy this bad mother. Miller & Sienkiewicz on Elektra. Sold! (gee, that second to last sentence just sounds wrong somehow)

Aw, man! I spent a lot of effort tracking down the MARVEL ESSENTIALS version of these books and now they go and ambush an Omnibus edition on me. Damn you, Marvel! Now I have to find someone to dump the b&w reprints on...or maybe just keep it for the kids. The ESSENTIALS edition had a few tits airbrushed out. I wonder if they did the same thing for the Omnibus? Are Americans more prudish today than in the '70s? Seriously? Tomb of Dracula was always meant for a "mature audience", wasn't it? So what's the problem?

I know I'm not the target audience for this book but, damn!, I loved the first hardcover. Miyazawa's perfect for this kinda comic as well. Too bad not enough people are reading it.

ISBN: 978-0-7851-2740-6
Trim size: standard

Alan Davis, Yay! Truth be told I never heard about Clandestine until Marvel collected the team's old comics, slapped a hardcover around the pages, called it Clandestine Classic Premier HC and charged me over RM100 (USD$30) last month for the pleasure of owning a copy. I'm Marvel's biatch, what can I say?

FANTASTIC FOUR VISIONARIES: WALTER SIMONSON VOL. 2 TPB
Written by WALTER SIMONSON & DANNY FINGEROTH
Penciled by WALTER SIMONSON & REX VALVE
Cover by WALTER SIMONSON

It's the past, it's the future, it's an alternate Earth - when it's down to fighting cyborg dictators and displaced dinosaurs, who has time to figure out where they are?! It's another Simonson odyssey for the Fantastic Four and company, plus personal crises for the Human Torch and Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura)! Guest-starring Spider-Man and Rusty Collins of X-Factor/New Mutants fame! Collecting FANTASTIC FOUR #342-346.120 PGS./
All Ages …$14.99
ISBN: 978-0-7851-3130-4

Simply because I loved Simonson's work when he was with Marvel and I loved his artwork. Plus, his and Byrne's run on the FF are the only ones I think are worth collecting in their entirety (besides Lee & Kirby's run of course but that goes without saying). Also, until recently I've always pronounced his name as 'SEE-MEN-SON' when it should be 'SY-MEN-SON', shouldn't it? Silly me.

*Also check out Simonson's run on THOR (also collected in 5 volumes of Marvel Visionaries, Walt Simonson: The Mighty Thor). Holy crud! That's some good writing!

The following are "Maybes":

HULK: HEART OF THE ATOM PREMIERE HC

With the Hulk movie coming, it's Hulk's turn to shine in the collected editions section of Marvel. Never been a big fan of Hulk but look at that writing credit: Ellison, Thomas, Claremont, Mantlo. Duuuuuuude!

Jennifer Walters, alias She-Hulk, had it all. So why is she a bitter bounty hunter living in a trailer park? See how the mighty have fallen as the emerald adventuress carves out a new career on the margins of the Marvel Universe, where she's battling evil more to make a buck than to make a difference. Featuring the villainy of Hi-Lite, Absorbing Man, Titania and honest-to-gosh alien invaders, plus the puzzle of She-Hulk's new partner: a mystery woman named…Jennifer Walters? Be here now…or She-Hulk Smash! Collecting SHE-HULK #22-27.152 PGS./
Rated T+ …$14.99
ISBN: 978-0-7851-2563-1

I loved Slott's run on She-Hulk and while I admit Peter David has more hits than flops, I was a bit disappointed when I read that he was not going to write a 'funny' She-Hulk like what Slott did. Still, the man knows where his strength lies I suppose. If he can't do funny then it's better he doesn't. I'm playing a wait and see game on this title.

Heh..heh heh..heh heh..heh...he said Man-Thing. He said Essential Man-Thing! Hyuk Hyuk!

Poor man's Swamp Thing needs my love. I've gotta hunt down the first volume as well. Shouldn't be too hard. I don't think his book flies off the shelves that quick.

Friday Night Fights: Classic Edition Round 5

Yesterday I talked about 2000AD's The Simping Detective and what a great character undercover Judge Jack Point is. Not only that, dude can take can of himself too:

That's his catchphrase, by the way. Whenever someone asks him, "What's your point?", he says, "Comes after the Jack." And if you didn't get it then you don't know Jack.

Anyway, just because he walks around in clown makeup doesn't mean he can't deliver some whup-ass. Observe:

Five ninjas, people! FIVE!! and that's after the bar brawl above. You don't wanna mess with this Bozo.

Neither do you wanna mess with Bahlactus!

From The Simping Detective tpb, by Steve Spurrier and Frazer Irving.

The Simping Detective (Rebellion, 2007)

I was gonna write a long winded review about why The Simping Detective is awesome and should be read by all comic book readers...but I won't. Not because these stories which first appeared in Judge Dredd aren't a joy to read, they are. I'm just not one of those who can write long winded reviews. All I can say is, "I like the book. Here's why."

The protagonist is Jack Point, a Mega City One Judge working undercover as a private detective who dresses up as a clown. A simping detective ("simp" is someone who dresses up like an idiot or a simpleton). In Mega City One, walking around dressed like a clown is normal. You don't get much respect but no one thinks it's strange either. Oh, in case you're not familiar with Mega City One, Wikipedia is your friend. It's Judge Dredd's hometown don't you know?

Jack's beat is Angeltown, a corrupt sector in Mega City One complete with a corrupt sector chief, a mysterious crime boss and lots of femme fatales. If this sounds like something Dashiel Hammett cooked up or the next vehicle for Humphrey Bogart to star in if he was still alive, then you'd be right. Simping Detective is written in the style of a Film Noir albeit with a guy in a ridiculous clown getup as the main character. It's also written in a noirish style: lots of narration and one liners. A wordy comic is an oxymoron some might argue as all those balloons and captions will crowd the page. True, so writer Simon Spurrier gives entire panels to Jack's words and it works. It doesn't distract the reader away from the art and in fact enhances it. Also, with a limited page count to tell a story (8 pages...2000AD is an anthology magazine y'know?) Spurrier needs all the space he can get to deliver the plot and hook the reader and make them come back for more.

Jack Point is a conflicted Judge. He's one of the good guys working undercover but the temptation to chuck it all in and go native is a strong one and we see him struggle with that thought frequently in this collection. It doesn't help that his immediate boss is a bent Judge out to get him (and Jack's scheming to expose his boss as well) and some rogue Judges are asking him to quit and go freelance with them. He likes the vile underbelly he calls his home but his loyalty to duty reminds him that he's only there under false pretenses and when the time comes he has to do what's right. Jack Point is definitely not a one dimensional, obey-the-law-or-die-creep character like Dredd. Kudos to Steve Spurrier.

He is ably assisted by Frazer Irving who manages to translate Spurrier's plot into beautiful art in the limited space given to him. Irving doesn't bother with the setting preferring instead to concentrate on the characters. If you see the setting included then you know it's important. Otherwise, it's just a pair of talking heads (sometimes three) talking against a black background. This is a 2000AD comic so it's in black and white but occasionally colours do appear for a panel or two and when they do, they pop out.

When Spurrier's plots are added with Irving's art the result is a very good collection of stories. I would even recommend this to fans of classic noir who wouldn't touch a comic book or a sci-fi book with a ten foot pole. You don't need to know anything about Mega City One or "Ol' Stony Face" Judge Dredd (who makes a cameo) to enjoy The Simping Detective.

There are some loose ends left unresolved by the end of the book and I hope there'll be a future collection to address these threads. Besides, I like to read more of Judge Jack's adventures. My favourite story in the collection: No Body, No How. Jack wakes up and discovers that he'd been sharing his bed with a dead woman who had been shot through the head. No sign of forced entry and the bullet came from his gun but he doesn't remember anything. Then his date shows up. Cracking story.

There is also an all-text story included along with a cover gallery and some sketches by Irving.

Justice League International Vol. 1 HC (DC, 2008)

Let's hope DC collects the entire run of the Giffen/DeMatteis Justice League run because it was, in my opinion, the best run in League history. And my opinion matters, dammit! Keith Giffen and JM DeMatteis chose to take the humourous route for this League and while some readers didn't like it, most embraced the concept like a long lost friend. I seem to recall reading a Giffen interview in some magazine where he admitted that making Justice League funny was not his nor DeMatteis' original plan. They were merely adjusting to the situation. When DC green lit a new Justice League comic, Giffen said he naturally wanted some heavy hitters in the team. He wanted Batman. He got Batman. How about Superman? Sorry, no. Okay, no problem. Green Lantern? DC gave him a Green Lantern but not the Green Lantern. Dr. Fate for some magic kick ass-ery. Captain Marvel was being revamped so the powers that be at DC insisted he be included. And the Martian Manhunter as well since he was in the previous Justice League (the "Detroit League" which no one wants to talk about nowadays). And then DC gave him Blue Beetle, Black Canary, Doctor Light (the good one, not the retconned rapist), Mr. Miracle, Oberon and Booster Gold because he had his own solo title at the time.

And that's how Justice League International got to be funny. Not because the writers wanted it to be but because they looked at the group and thought, "Holy crap! That's a lot of second stringers we got stuck with!"

I don't know whether Giffen was being truthful in that interview or not but I don't care. His Justice League had
one of the greatest moments in comics EVAH! and it also introduced the Beetle and Gold partnership that was cruelly destroyed when DC wanted to bring back the infinite Earths. Also, Batman made a funny:

But reason numero uno this Justice League is fondly remembered today? Kevin Maguire. No one draws facial expressions like Kevin Maguire.

Sam Neill is Maxwell Lord.

The hiring of an unknown penciller and giving him the task to draw the company's flagship super group either proved that DC saw this guy's talent and decided to give him a big break or that DC just couldn't be bothered with yet another League comic that was never gonna outsell Uncanny X-Men anyway so they just grabbed the nearest penciller they could find and gave him some cash in return for some artwork. In any case, both the comic and the penciller owed each other for their respective successes.

And now for the hardcover collected edition....the main gripe here is the almost newsprint quality of the paper stock used. I said "almost" because I don't think it's the same paper stock that they used on the original comic. This one is of a tad higher grade but still not glossy and for a retail price of USD$24.99 and just seven issues (192 pages), the fanboys cried foul. I for one do not agree with the fans but I can see where they were coming from. Plus, I loved the JLI so I'm biased. What's collected here are some of the most fun superhero stories ever written just a few years before mainstream comics went all gritty and dark and "mature". Go grab a copy and give Kevin Maguire some lovin'. And then wait for volume two.

The War That Time Forgot Miniseries (DC, 2008)

Good news: DC saw fit to publish a brand new The War That Time Forgot miniseries. TWTTF was probably the most insane comic DC ever published and you should totally get the Showcase Presents collection. In this new mini series, though, it's not just a battalion of G.Is vs. dinosaurs...it's a whole bunch of other folks as well including Hans Von Hammer, the Enemy Ace. A World War I German fighter pilot fighting dinosaurs! All that's missing in this comic are zombies.

And why does Enemy Ace have that look on his face? Is he running away because he just saw a big ass lizard with sharp teeth? Or because there's a Native American chasing him on horseback? Or maybe he realises he's in a comic book and he sees a giant pair of eyes staring back at him? Anyway, anything versus dinosaurs stokes my interest. Too bad for comic publishers I only read comics in trade format nowadays (yes, I know I'm probably the reason interesting books like Blue Beetle are facing cancellation).

Bad News: It's written by Bruce Jones. I read some of his Hulk stories. Meh.

Spider-Man/Red Sonja HC (Marvel, 2008)

Spider-Man/Red Sonja managed to make my wife roll her eyes so far back up her head, I thought she was possessed by the Dark Lord Beelzebub. It's not the story, it's the redhead. My wife wanted to know why Red Sonja goes around killing bad people in a chain mail bikini while Spider-Man is covered from head to toe in skintight spandex. To which I replied, "Phhfftt! Women." Master of the witty comeback, me.

Too bad the story isn't much fun. It's basically a remake of their first encounter in Marvel Team-Up #79 (which is also included in this collection). It's just five issues of Red Sonja and Spider-Man swinging, slashing and punching in a magically transformed New York after Kulan Gath is once again released to terrorise the modern world.

So why did I even bother buying this book?

For the opportunity to irritate my wife. What else?

Friday Night Fights: Classic Edition Round 3

Because I'm the goddam Silver Age Batman, bitch!

The Brave and the Bold #95 is such an insane comic, you just know it was written by Bob Haney. This issue has it all: a missing person, a femme fatale, unrequited love, fights in exotic locales and Batman getting framed for murder....

As we all know, when you are on the run from the law, all you need is a hat and an overcoat to fool the cops. They'll never notice that you're still wearing a cowl over your face and your undies on the outside. Truly, Batman is a master of disguise.

But it's the punch that makes this issue a classic. Female, shmemale, he's hitting that face like nobody's business. Let's see it one more time.

Batman is no one's patsy!

Neither is Bahlactus!

Workers of the World, Take a Break!

1st May today. Labour Day Holiday.

Like newly crowned king of the comics blogosphere, Chris Sims, I am also too busy too write anything new in my blog
because of this game. I scored with Michelle after just two dates. Woo-Hoo! And all I had to do was take her to a cabaret show. Man, she's easy. Is she an undercover cop? Or is she working for Vlad's rival(s)?

See you tomorrow for a Bahlactus classic edition smackdown.
